Zane A. Wyrick, a native of Knoxville, TN, grew up bleeding the sacred colors orange and white of the University of Tennessee. He first began his exploration of music in middle school playing trumpet...dismally. Once he entered the Central High School marching band, however, he slowly began to find sense in music. His sophomore year, his band director chose to switch him to baritone. During his junior year, his band director decided to move him once again, this time to French horn, of which he now plays in the UT bands. These instrument switches gave him an in-depth exploration and analysis of the versatility of music; in addition, they gave him an understanding of how music works that he would not have otherwise had. At 16, Zane wrote his first symphony entitled ?The Crumbling Walls: A Tribute to the Fall of the Berlin Wall? after playing around with different ideas in his head. Zane presented the piece to his band director who greatly enjoyed it and encouraged him to transcribe it for Central?s symphonic band. He did, and the piece was performed at the school?s 2008 spring concert; it received a standing ovation. All of this, along with his band director?s gentle prodding and critiquing, laid the groundwork for Zane's idea to pursue music composition as a career. After his initial meeting with Dr. Jacobs, Zane was cemented in the idea of taking composition as a major. He is now a freshman at the university and working on a dual major in music composition and public administration.
