Music Composition Studio

Rebecca Henry

Rebecca was born in Maryville, TN and taken to concerts from the age of 3. Her parents were in medical professions but both loved music, having played piano, violin, clarinet and mellophone between them. She studied violin and piano from age 5 and clarinet in band since 5th grade. Her piano teacher also encouraged entering composition festivals and at age 12 she won her age division of the Knoxville Young Composers’ Contest. Rebecca became the first pre-college student allowed to play in the Maryville College orchestra, participated in All-State Orchestra each year of high school and was a National Merit Semi-Finalist. She has been very active as a church musician in Blount County and Sevier County, where she now lives, and provides piano and violin services for area weddings and other occasions. After a hiatus to do bookkeeping for her husband’s business and homeschool two sons—one now an R.N. and the other a doctoral student in Chemistry--Rebecca completed her undergraduate degree at UTK Magna cum Laude in 2009. Taking music aesthetics and orchestration courses with Dr. Jacobs led to his recommendation that she study composition in graduate school. Her immediate goal of a Masters degree in Composition will serve her long-term pursuit of affecting people deeply with music and other arts.
